HOUMA - The United Houma Nation's first new chief in more than a decade pledged during his Saturday inauguration to continue the tribe's goal of gaining federal recognition and told tribal members to rely on their resilient nature during the oil spill.

Thomas Dardar Jr., 54, a Houma resident and longtime member of the tribe's council, replaces Brenda Dardar-Robichaux, who served as principal chief for 13 years. He told a crowd gathered at the Grand Caillou auditorium that the encroaching oil threatens their "connection with the land and water" but that it should not drive them from their community.
